For over 30 years, surgical devices have featured ultrasound to gently fragment and remove the natural lens during cataract surgery. Most Centres continue to use these systems for both cataract and lens replacement surgery. However, the natural non-cataract lens removed during lens replacement surgery is much softer than a cataract lens, requiring a gentler technology to remove it. At his Calgary Centre, Dr. Demong uses the Infiniti System with the Aqualase function to provides that gentle solution. It delivers a higher level of control and safety than earlier systems, enabling precise, gentle removal of your natural lenses.
This system has three operational modes, customized for the condition of the eye. For cataract surgery, Dr. Demong uses the Ultrasound function, the traditional mode. He may also use Neosonix technology. This adds sonic oscillation to ultrasound, a gentler approach, particularly valuable when the capsular bag is very fragile.
The Aqualase mode is most often used during Refractive Lens Exchange. Using fine micro-jets of fluid, the Aqualase quickly and gently erodes the lens, rinsing it away without disruption to surrounding structures.
The system warms a sterile solution to body temperature and fills the space between the capsular bag and the lens with fluid to absorb vibration. Fluid jets then emulsify the lens and the particles are gently vacuumed out, preparing the area for artificial lens insertion. The process typically takes less than a minute.
This deluxe system reduces your risk of complications and irritation within the eye, promotes a speedy recovery and most importantly, enhances the clarity of your vision upon recovery.
