Dr. Thaddeus Demong

Dr. Thaddeus Demong, Refractive & Corneal Surgeon

The most important decision you will make when undergoing Surgical Vision Correction is the selection of your surgeon. Not all surgeons provide the same level of expertise and judgment, nor do they have the same outcomes.  Your task is to find the most capable surgeon for your ideal visual outcome.  At Demong Associate Eyecentre, in Calgary, Alberta, your surgeon is Dr. Thaddeus Demong, fellowship-trained corneal and refractive surgery specialist. For over 25 years, he's been performing corneal and other refractive procedures, and since 1991, he's helped over 12,000 patients see well with Laser Vision Correction. He treats patients with a full range of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, including simple through highly complex corrections. Complications, should they arise, are managed directly by Dr. Demong. So whether you require minimal supervision or extensive follow up care postoperatively, you'll be in very capable hands.

As a respected Laser surgeon and Refractive Lens surgeon, Dr. Demong is dedicated to using the finest technological innovations to complement his surgical expertise. He believes the best outcome can only be achieved when the surgeon delivers exquisite skill and judgment combined with the most precise technology available. When laser surgery was introduced to North America in the late 1980's, he became one of the first 50 surgeons in North America to qualify as a Laser Vision Correction surgeon, trained by a true pioneer and still renouned leader in the industry, Dr. Marguerite McDonald. One of the developers of the technology, Dr. Stephen Trokel was at his side the first day he performed laser surgery in his clinic. Since that time, he has continued to refine his technique and embrace technological advances. So committed is he to ongoing development that he owns the only Laser Centre in Alberta to replace its treatment laser seven times as each new generation offers a greater level of precision.

Operating out of Rocky Mountain Surgery Centre, his privately owned surgical and laser suites located adjacent to the office in Calgary, he has acquired the first high speed  Wavelight Allegretto Eye Q Laser System in Alberta, the smart choice, offering wavefront optimized treatment with every procedure and custom options for a full range of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Combined with the IntraLASE FS-60 Laser to create the surgical flap for LASIK procedures, he provides true leading edge technology for Albertans. These technologies provide a higher level of safety and accuracy than ever possible in the past.  Your result? Simply better vision.

If you undergo lens replacement surgery rather than laser surgery, similar leading edge technology and techniques are used. He uses only tinted foldable acrylic lenses, developed on the Acrysof Lens platform used world wide since 1993.  He was involved in the initial research of those lenses and has adopted new models as each new modification produced improvements in visual outcomes and safety.  The latest lenses are available in several different models to meet your individual needs: the ReSTOR multifocal model for a full range of near to distant vision, and the Toric model for combined distance and astigmatism, and a monofocal (single distance) model. The first in Alberta, he uses the Infiniti Aqualase Surgical System to remove the natural lens gently and safely, preparing the area for the lens implant.

Now, he is pleased to offer a new option:  Cachet Phakic Lens Insertion for those with very high nearsightedness and who are not well suited to laser surgery due to thin corneas.  This anterior lens is placed in front of the iris and is commonly referred to as an Implantable Contact Lens.  For the past 5 years, he has been one of five primary investigators of this lens in Canada.  The lens was approved by Health Canada in November 2009 and he became the first surgeon in Canada to be certified to offer this new lens which augments or supplements the strength of your natural crystalline lens, leaving the accommodative reflex intact. This procedure is most suitable for adults up to age 45.

He is dedicated to raising the standards of care for his patients and others undergoing Surgical Vision Correction. Acting in an advisory capacity, he provided laser surgery recommendations related to surgeon training, staff qualifications and training, equipment maintenance, and sterilization techniques to the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons. In January, 2004, several of those recommendations became the standard for all Alberta Centres and surgeons, but he continues to exceed those standards at his private Centre.

Dr. Demong also specializes in other types of surgery, including cataract removal, corneal transplants, DALK surgery,  DSAEK surgery and Corneal Collagen CrossLinking.  We offer full details of these procedures at the time of consultation which can be arranged through referral from your optometrist.

At his Calgary Clinic, Dr. Demong performs preoperative consultations, IntraLASIK, PRK, Lens Replacement Surgery or Implantable Contact Lens Insertion, and one-day postoperative examinations. He also provides your postoperative support until his personal expertise is no longer required. Subsequent examinations are performed by your own optometrist in consultation and collaboration with Dr. Demong.  He continues to oversee the management of your recovery until it is complete.
